Current Fellows

Arnaldo Adam Cabrera

  • Year joined program: 2025
  • Major: Biomedical Engineering
  • Research: Arnaldo Cabrera is a member of the Dale Lab, where their research investigates how “smart” electrical pulses delivered to the spinal cord can re-activate silent neural circuits and restore rhythmic breathing after cervical spinal cord injuries. By understanding the spinal cord’s natural ability to learn and adapt, a process known as neuroplasticity, this project aims to develop therapies that enable patients to breathe independently and reduce reliance on mechanical ventilators.

Kimberly Lobo-Garcia

  • Year joined program: 2025
  • Major: Biological sciences
  • Research: Kimberly’s research project focuses on investigating daily rhythms from the circadian clock mechanism in young adult human skeletal muscle cells. In Dr. Esser’s lab, one of their main goals is to understand how the circadian clock in
skeletal muscle cells may change with aging, exercise, and disease.

Ifeoma Okoh

  • Year joined program: 2025
  • Major: Health science (Pre-OT)
  • Research: Ifeoma is currently involved in research focused on joint disease and chronic pain, analyzing joint tissues from the knee, including the meniscus, to improve how joint conditions are studied and treated.

Amelia Perez

  • Year joined program: 2025
  • Major: Microbiology & Cell Science
  • Research: Amelia’s research examines how human epithelial cells detect viral infections and activate early immune responses. Amelia studies how different viral sensing pathways regulate a key immune protein, IRF3, and how this affects interferon signaling during infection.

Amalia Perez Valiente

  • Year joined program: 2025
  • Major: Psychology
  • Research: Amalia’s research project focuses on how GLP-1 receptor signaling affects memory and learning in rodents, specifically examining how it influences brain circuits involved in cognition and decision-making. This work aligns with Dr. Setlow’s lab’s broader research on how different substances impact addiction, cognitive decline, and age-related changes in the brain.
